Sauber Denies Blocking for Ferrari
Earlier this week former Sauber-Ferrari driver Norberto Fontana made bold claims that in the final round of the 1997 World Championship, he was ”ordered” by engine-supplier Ferrari to block Jacques Villeneuve as much as possible to give Michael Schumacher the chance to win the race and the Championship. Former Sauber team principal Peter Sauber has since denied these claims.
Sauber told Swiss newspaper Blick:
In the nine years that we cooperated, Ferrari never expressed the desire that we should obstruct an opponent of (Michael) Schumacher on the track.
